Coastal Sussex : Sand Dunes

by Dave on August 15, 2008

Coastal Sussex Delaware features some of the most beautiful sand dunes in the country.  Sand dunes….

help protect our shorelines and act as natural barriers from storms.  They are also the most effective defense against flooding tides and waves.  If you live on or near one of Delaware’s local beaches, you should strive to maintain the dunes. DNREC suggests preventing damage to dunes and vegetation by using designated walkovers and access points, keeping cars and trucks off the dunes, using signs to explain the importance of staying off the beach grass, allowing beach grass to grow naturally, and avoiding planting hard landscaping boxes, stones, and concrete as these can become debris in a large storm.
