California Rehab Uses Surfing To Beat Addiction

by Dave on February 18, 2009

If you have spent any time at all on a board in the ocean, you know how amazing it can be, and why everyone from tweens to the AARP set break out a board at the first sign of surf.

However, a facility in California is taking the power of surfing to a whole new level.

From TransWorldNews.com:

A California drug rehab has found a powerful connection between learning to surf and maintaining sobriety. Sober Living by the Sea has been helping men and women achieve long term sobriety and abstinence from eating disorders for almost 25 years here in Newport Beach, and rewarding physical fitness activities are a cornerstone of this recovery program at the drug and alcohol treament centers.

Sober Living by the Sea also finds that cultural, spiritual, social, and esteem building activities help men and women quit drinking and using drugs. In the weekly surfing expedition, the clients who are in recovery at Sober Living by the Sea will build esteem by learning something new, experience the fun and vibrant culture of Orange County’s surf environment, and be very social as they cheer each other on throughout their lessons. Of course, being in the Pacific Ocean at sunrise is a spiritual experience, as is watching the birds and dolphins which are swimming around.

It’s so nice to know that California rehab has many idea to help their people to stay healthy despite of what happened. Transferring the attention of the clients to a good way is a nice strategy. Learn to surf and have some fun.
