Lewes Steps Out For Fitness begins fourth summer program June 18

Registrants will receive free pedometers, visors, restaurant discounts

Lewes Steps Out For Fitness will celebrate its fourth summer of walking and fitness starting Thursday, June 18, in the public parking lot at Lewes Beach. This year’s program will include free pedometers and visors for those who register as well as demonstrations at the new Canalfront Park in downtown Lewes.

Everyone is invited to join in this program that promotes healthy living and celebrates Lewes as a great town for walking.

Here’s how it works: participants register at Lewes Beach every other Thursday, starting June 18, between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. At their first sign-in, registrants will receive a free Lewes Steps Out For Fitness pedometer, which records steps. Recording each day’s steps on a registration card received at sign-in, registrants then bring their card back two weeks letter to chart their progress. At their second sign-in, registrants will receive a free Lewes Steps Out For Fitness visor to go along with their pedometer.

After registration on the sign-in dates, all of the participants will then walk to the new Canalfront Park for a variety of brief, fun, healthy-living demonstrations, listed below. Then, getting a nice head start on their next period’s steps, participants can walk back to Lewes Beach where their car is parked.

Registered participants can also finish off their every-other-week sign-ins by dining at one of several downtown Lewes restaurants where they will receive a 10 percent discount.

Restaurants offering discounts on those Thursday sign-in dates, to those showing their registration cards, include Besemé, Buttery, Gilligan’s, Half Full, Jerry’s Seafood, Kindle, Second Street Grill and Striper Bites.

Also on sign-in nights, Beebe Medical Center will offer free blood pressure screening, Lewes Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand with fire prevention and emergency preparedness displays and items; Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club’s Sussex County Trail Guides will be available; and the City of Lewes will provide evacuation pamphlets and Lewes Maritime History Trail brochures.

The 2009 Lewes Steps Out For Fitness program will conclude with awards, refreshments and the annual autumnal equinox bon fire on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Lewes Steps Out For Fitness is sponsored by Beebe Medical Center, Cape Gazette, City of Lewes, Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau and Quest Fitness. For further information, contact Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau at 302-645-8073.
