How to Start a Victory Garden

If you want to follow in the footsteps of First Locavore Michelle Obama and start your own Victory Garden here at the Delaware beaches, here’s what you do, according to Sue Ryan of the Good Earth Market & Organic Farm on Rt. 26 in Clarksville:

1.     Turn sod over in a 12-foot by 4-foot spot in full sun.
2.     Build sides with untreated lumber. 2×6 or 2×8 are fine.  (Optional)
3.     Add compost and mix with native soil to fill/raise bed.
4.     Remove sod/weed clumps & shake off all soil.
5.     Plant anytime after May 20th.

WHAT TO PLANT

Ryan recommends 4 tomato plants, 2 zucchini, 2 cucumber, 4 bush green beans, 6 strawberry and a row of herbs, laid out like similar to the diagram below. If you’re succesful and enjoy the experience, Ryan says you can re-plant for a fall garden.
