Tunnell Cancer Center to host a Free Breast Health Forum Wednesday, June 23

by Dave on June 7, 2010

Supported by a grant from the Philadelphia affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, Tunnell Cancer Center will host a free breast health forum on Wednesday, June 23, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at its facility at the Beebe Health Campus, 18947 John J. Williams Highway, Rehoboth Beach.

Breast cancer educational information will be available and a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant will be present to perform clinical breast exams. No cost mammograms will be offered to women who meet specific eligibility requirements. A nurse navigator will assist those facing financial or emotional barriers that are causing them to avoid receiving regular mammography screening.

Risk of breast cancer increases with age for all women, but the mortality rate among African-American and Hispanic women is higher than for white women.

The screening is part of Tunnell Cancer Center’s SOS², Sharing Our Stories, Saving Our Sisters program, which is dedicated to saving women’s lives through breast health education, digital mammography, and breast health follow-up. The program’s mission is to reach minority and under-served women in Sussex County so that they will be screened earlier and receive medical care as soon as needed.

All women 21 and older should have a clinical breast exam and all women 40 years and older should have a yearly mammogram.

Call (302) 645-3100, ext. 2724 to make an appointment for a clinical breast examination. There will be door prizes for all women who participate.
