Lewes Steps Out For Fitness

by Dave on June 14, 2010

How many times can the people of Lewes walk back and forth across the U.S. between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox?

Starting Thursday, June 24 with registration at the Lewes Beach public parking lot, the Lewes Steps Out For Fitness program aims to answer that question. Using free pedometers that will be given out at registration, participants keep track of the total steps they take each day and record them every two weeks at sign-in events at Lewes Beach. All of those steps are converted to miles and the progress made by the community going back and forth across the country is displayed on a big sign at the east end of the Lewes Beach parking lot.

At the bi-weekly sign-in events, which take place from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., participants bring their step record cards to Lewes Beach where they place their step totals on master sheets kept by the organizers. At 6 p.m., the participants walk down Savannah Road to the Canalfront Park for a special event. On opening night, for example, there will be a Frisbee golf demonstration and mini-tournament at the Canalfront Park organized by Quest Fitness. All participants that night, in addition to their pedometers provided by Beebe Medical Center, will receive free Frisbees courtesy of Lewes Fire Department and Nemours Health and Prevention Services. The demonstrations and activities usually last about half an hour after which participants make their way back to their cars at Lewes Beach.

All participants who register at two consecutive sign-in events will receive a free Lewes Steps Out For Fitness T-shirt.

The program concludes, and ushers in fall, with a grand finale bon fire event Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Lewes Beach parking lot. Participants will be recognized with special pins, there will be free refreshments, and the evening concludes with music and a bon fire on the beach.

Lewes Steps Out For Fitness is designed to get people outside and walking. Health experts recommend that people aim for 10,000 steps each day to keep themselves in good shape.

Lewes Steps Out For Fitness is sponsored by Beebe Medical Center, Cape Gazette, City of Lewes, Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, Lewes Fire Department, Nemours Health and Prevention Services and Quest Fitness.
