Three Arrests Made in Rehoboth Area Attempted Robbery/Vehicle Theft and Vehicle Break-ins

Early this afternoon the fourth suspect Delaware State Police was seeking in conjunction with the Attempted Robbery investigation from Tuesday August 2, 2010 has been arrested.

A 15 year old boy from Millsboro accompanied by his parents turned himself into Delaware State Police Troop 4 Detectives around 12 noon today. The 15 year old is alleged to have been the unknown male who also assaulted the 21 year old victim in a foiled robbery attempt August 2, 2010.

The juvenile was charged with Attempted Robbery First Degree and the three additional charges listed above. The juvenile has been remanded to the Stevenson House Detention Center on $93,000 secured bond.

ORIGINAL STORY
From the State Police:

Delaware State Police over the past week have been investigating a number of thefts from vehicles and robbery complaints. Wednesday August 4, 2010 Delaware State Police received a break in some Lewes and Rehoboth area crimes.

A Trooper on routine patrol Wednesday August 4, 2010 around 12:30 p.m. observed a silver/gray colored Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound on Coastal Highway N/O State Route 9 Lewes. The observant Trooper recently handled a theft of a grey Jeep Cherokee on Sunday August 1, 2010 from Fayette Street Lewes.

The Trooper positioned his vehicle behind the Jeep Cherokee and confirmed through a registration inquiry that the vehicle was indeed stolen. The Trooper activated his emergency equipment and the Jeep pulled over N/O Nassau Bridge. The Trooper apprehended the driver Shaun L. Houchens of Milton however the passenger a 16 year old male Lewes resident fled on foot. State Police Aviation which was in the area at the time of this incident immediately tracked down the 16 year old and hovered over him until ground units could take him into custody.

State Police through a subsequent investigation were able to link Shaun L. Houchens, Michael T. Brittingham and the 16 year old to a robbery attempt which occurred Tuesday August 2, 2010 on Field Crest and Ramblewood Drive Rehoboth, Delaware. In this robbery a 21 year old victim was walking to his residence when a slow moving vehicle approached from the rear believed to be a grey or dark colored 4 door Jeep. The victim advised the front right passenger door opened and he was struck on the back of his head by an unknown object. The victim who had his glasses knocked off limiting his ability to see was unable to provide a more detailed description of the suspects. The first suspect continued to assault the victim as he lay on the ground and then attempted to separate him from his backpack. A second suspect also believed to be a male exited the rear passenger side of the Jeep and assisted the first suspect in assaulting the victim. The second suspect also was unable to free the backpack from the victim.

During the above attempted robbery the 16 year old is alleged to have been the initial driver. The forth suspect related to this incident opened the passenger door as they approached the 21 year old victim. The door struck the victim knocking him to the ground. The 16 year old suspect along with the fourth suspect exited the vehicle and began to assault the victim. When they were unsuccessful in obtaining a backpack that the victim was carrying they re-entered the Jeep Cherokee then fled the area. Shaun Houchens during this incident climbed into the driver’s seat and drove all the suspects away. State Police is still currently looking for a fourth person involved in the attempted robbery and have obtained creditable information on the identity. The fourth suspect information will be disclosed at a later date and time.

State Police additionally obtained information related to area thefts from vehicles which occurred on Fayette Street, Graceland Drive, Ocean Reach Drive and North Village Loop Lewes Delaware. Shaun Houchens and the 16 year old male were linked to these crimes where they victimized eleven different people by entering their vehicles and either stealing property or rummaging through them scattering their belongings about. Including the 2007 Jeep Cherokee that was stolen a total of $20,000 worth of property was taken.

Houchens, Brittingham and the 16 year old male were arrested on the attempted robbery charge along with additional charges listed above. Houchens and Brittingham were both remanded to Sussex Correctional Center in lieu of $118,006 and $91,000 bond respectively.

Side Note:
Rehoboth Police Department is also conducting robbery investigations within their city limits. The persons arrested are persons of interest in those investigations and the media is asked to contact Rehoboth Police Department (Cpl Riddle) for further information.
