Former Delaware Governor Sherman W. Tribbitt, who served in the state’s top post from 1973-1977, died Saturday.

Local connections to the former Governor include the opponent he defeated in the 1964 Lieutenant Governor election, William Best of Rehoboth Beach, and the opponent who knocked him from the Lt. Governor’s office four years later, Gene Bookhammer of Lewes.

Also of note was Tribbitt’s secretary during his administration, a young lady who eventually became Delaware’s first female Governor, Ruth Ann Minner of Milford.
