Azafran’s Steele to Demonstrate at Lewes Farmers Market Saturday

by Dave on August 24, 2010

On Saturday August 28th the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will open at the Historical Society Complex at the corner of Third and Shipcarpenter Streets. The Market will be open from 8 am to 12 pm every Saturday through October 9th.

Saturday’s 10:00 am demonstration features local chef Richard Steele. Richard will prepare one of his popular signature dishes from Café Azafran, a year-round mainstay of downtown Lewes.

Chefs and brothers Mark and Richard Steele of Lewes, Delaware opened Café Azafran in December 2002. The Café has received three Delaware Today “Best of Delaware” Critics Choice awards in that time. Eric Ruth of the “News Journal” in Wilmington reviewed (August 12, 2005) Café Azafran favorably and gave it three stars. Café Azafran specializes in Mediterranean cuisine and tapas dining. Richard grew up cooking in his Grandmother’s restaurant, the Lamp Post Seafood Restaurant in Rehoboth. Richard has been running the Café for the past three years, and it continues to be one of the most popular eating and meeting spots in Lewes! This summer Richard expanded to a second restaurant in Rehoboth Beach!

The very popular Children’s Reading Program at the Market takes place 9-10 am every Saturday at the School House at the Lewes Historical Society Complex. This program is designed especially for ages 3 to 8 but all children are welcome and encouraged to attend with their parents. Each week a special book is chosen to reflect the themes of growth, change and healthy eating. This week’s featured book is Get Up and Go! by Nancy Carlson.

And the Historic Lewes Farmers Market needs your help. Please vote for the Historic Lewes Farmers Market! They are in a very tight race to win America’s Favorite Farmers Market Contest sponsored by American Farmland Trust. If they win the contest in their category they will receive a farmers’ market promotional package worth $3,000 to help promote the Market and their farmers. The contest ends on August 31. They really want to win, and market fans have just a few more days to make that happen. The website to vote is wwwfarmland.org.
