Milton Man Critical after Rt. 1 Accident

The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating an accident in Lewes that has left a Milton man in critical condition.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. this afternoon as Raymond J. Edwards, 76, of Milton, DE was operating a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 and was traveling west bound on Tulip Lane. For an unknown reason, Edwards failed to remain stopped at a stop sign and pulled into the path of a 2009 Toyota Tacoma that was traveling northbound on SR 1 (Coastal Highway) and which was being operated by Matthew W. Smith, 35, of Lewes, DE. Smith’s vehicle struck the driver’s door of the Chevrolet S-10. Raymond Edwards was transported from the scene by EMS to Beebe Memorial Hospital where he was treated and admitted in critical condition with fractures to his ribs and pelvis and a ruptured spleen. Matthew Smith was also transported from the scene by EMS to Beebe Memorial Hospital where he was being treated for a laceration to his face and arm, and a fractured wrist.

Northbound State Rt. 1 was closed for approximately 2 hours as the accident was investigated and cleared. It has since been re-opened.
