Governor’s Weekly Message

by Dave on September 25, 2010

In his weekly message, Governor Markell announced that he, along with Delaware Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery and others will hit the road between now and the end of the year for ten public “Conversations about Stronger Schools.” These “Conversations” will focus on efforts underway to improve student performance, support teachers and make sure Delaware’s children graduate ready to succeed in work or college. The Governor, Education Secretary, educators, administrators and private sector employers will talk about a path to stronger schools and give Delawareans an opportunity to ask questions and engage on elements of the plan.

“For our state’s long-term economic health and prosperity, it’s clear the most critical thing we can do is make sure we have some of the best public schools in the country,” said Governor Markell. “We need to know our kids are graduating ready to compete and ready to win – against anyone in the world. This upcoming week, there are a number of opportunities to share some of that progress.”

On Monday, Delaware will be represented at the Education Nation summit in New York City, which highlights best practices in public education from around the world. On Tuesday, the Governor will join hundreds of educators, academic and business leaders, administrators and others at the University of Delaware for a seminar called the “Race to Deliver,” which focuses on the progress we have made here at home to make our public schools stronger. On Wednesday, states from around the country will send representatives to Delaware to learn what we’ve done right after winning the national Race to the Top contest. The most critical discussions will happen at a series of open “Conversation About Stronger Schools” taking place up and down the state between now and the end of the year.
