SCHS Drama Students Stage 12th Night

by Dave on October 6, 2010

Sussex Central High School’s Take II Drama Club will stage William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, or What You Will on October 21-23 at the school’s Centre for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Each performance begins at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

“I think it’s going to be a really good production,” SCHS drama teacher Linda Killion said. “We have some really funny and talented students who are great at physical comedy.”

The production will feature about 20 of Sussex Central’s Take II Drama students.

Twelfth Night begins with the lead character Viola being shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria and being separated from her twin brother Sebastian, whom she believes to be dead. Posing as a young man, Viola enters the service of Duke Orsino. The Duke is in love with Lady Olivia, who is grieving over the recent deaths of her father and brother and refuses all potential suitors. Orsino uses Viola, masquerading as “Cesario,” to express his love to Olivia. However, Olivia has fallen in love with Viola, whom she believes to be a man. Viola, meanwhile, has fallen in love with Duke Orsino.

In the play’s comic subplot, a group of characters tries to convince Olivia’s head steward Malvolio that Olivia is secretly in love with him. Confusion reigns when Sebastian, Viola’s twin brother, arrives on the scene.

Sussex Central’s student cast features Suzy Messick as Olivia, Kyle Godwin as Duke Orsino, Sarah Lee as Viola, Maria Vincent as Feste, James Davis as Malvolio, Logan Lynch as Sir Toby and Ashley Gillespie as Maria.

Twelfth Night is the first in a series of stage productions for the Take II Drama Club during the 2010-2011 school year. The remainder of the schedule is as follows:

November 19 Musical cabaret
December 10 Comedy club
February 17-19 Agatha Christie’s The Mouse Trap
April 7-9 Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!
May 6 Comedy club

“I wanted to have a variety,” Killion said of the season’s schedule. “I wanted to introduce them to different things.”

All Take II Drama productions begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.
