Booth Issues Statement on New Position

State Senator Joe Booth (R-Georgetown) issued a statement Sunday concerning the controversy surrounding his new position with Sussex Technical High School:

I am honored to have been chosen by Sussex Tech as their new Community-Business & Industry Liaison. The position will be paying approximately $60,000 a year.

My job duties cover both parts of the school, the High School and the Adult Ed Division, which together provide an excellent education opportunity for over 4,000 people a year.  I will be working to build relationships between the school and businesses in the County to help students become career and college ready, and to aid our students in job placement.  I will be working with the Delaware Economic Development Office to ensure that the school is providing the right groundwork for our students so they can be successfully employed in our County and State in the future. I will also be assisting with Alumni Relations, graduate followup and assisting with efforts to meet the District Strategic Plan as well as state and federal mandates.

The duty associated with this employment opportunity becomes increasingly relevant to me as my own family’s dry cleaning business, like many small businesses today, has been hit hard by the economic downturn.  We are in the process of cutting back hours of operation while contemplating what to do with the business.  As with many others in our community, the reality of my business situation combined with the fact that I have a child in high school with 2 others in college aided in my decision to seek other employment. It is imperative that we prepare all students, both high school and adult, with the skill set needed to be competitive in today’s workforce.

I am honored that my constituents chose to send me back to the Legislature, and I am honored that Sussex Technical School District chose me for this position.   I want to assure my constituents and the entire school community that I am dedicated to serving them to the best of my ability.  I will work hard every day to make sure that I live up to the expectations of my family, my constituents and my new employer.
