Sussex County Dogs

2008-photos-mb-sony-035.jpgAs a Chesapeake Bay Retriever owner, I find it quite difficult to swim my dog locally since there are few beaches that allow pets off leash. All dogs need a soothing swim, especially when the temperature is predicted to rise above 90 this weekend. So, where do you take your beloved canine for water exercise?

Dewey Beach. Pets are allowed off-leash before 10 am and after 5 pm. The only catch in party town USA is that you have to find parking. The local tip is to get there early and park in the Lighthouse parking lot or just drive up to the town hall and purchase a daily or weekly parking permit.

No other towns allow dogs off-leash, so be careful, especially in the state park if you let your dog off the leash. Head over to www.deweybeachde.com for additional information on pets and municipal rules and regulations.

Besides Dewey, there are not many alternatives for dog owners to swim their pets. I have tried almost every place in Sussex County and been kicked off beaches, out of ponds and off private property.

Maybe the solution is to petition Cape Henlopen State Park to open up a section of beach for dog owners to swim their pups? Just an idea. Try www.dogfriendly.com for friendly dog places on the planet.
