Delaware State Fair : 4H

udaily_alumni1.gifHere in Delaware, it would be a fair minus more than 6,500 4-H exhibits, including fresh-baked pies and home-grown produce; calves, chickens and lambs raised by children, photo collections and hand-tailored clothes and much more. It would be a fair minus a public speaking contest, talent show, fashion revue and horse show.

Fortunately, fairgoers have no reason to worry. The partnership between the Delaware State Fair and Delaware 4-H is alive and well, reports Joy Sparks, state program leader for Delaware 4-H. “4-H has been a part of the Delaware State Fair since its inception,” says Sparks. “It’s something our 4-Hers look forward to participating in all year long.”

This year’s fair, which runs July 17-26, features such traditional 4-H favorites as:

  • 4-H dairy show at 9 a.m., Sunday, July 20;
  • 4-H public speaking contest at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, July 20;
  • 4-H talent show at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 20;
  • 4-H tractor driving contest at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 23;
  • 4-H archery competition July 25 at 2 p.m.,
  • 4-H avian bowl at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 26; and
  • 4-H awards celebration at 5 p.m., Saturday, July 26.

“As a young girl growing up in the Midwest, my summer revolved around getting my 4-H exhibits ready for the state fair,” says Jan Seitz, associate dean and director of UD Cooperative Extension. “I still remember how shy I was and how much I blossomed after competing in a public speaking contest one year at the fair,” recalls Seitz. “I love being at the Delaware State Fair all week and watching the 4-Hers compete. It brings me back to my youth.”
