Best of the Beach: Live Music

by Dave on May 15, 2009

As seen in Coastal Sussex Weekly, April 23, 2009:

Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats. Constantly pushing the boundaries of traditional beach music offerings, the original Dogfish brewpub gives music lovers everything from alt-rock to bluegrass, with every undefined musical style in between. 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. 226-2739,

Arena’s Deli & Bar. Beach bar veterans can claim to seeing impromptu sets by Dave Matthews, the band Live and more at Arena’s, famous for local live rock and a vast beer selection. 149 Rehoboth Ave., Village By The Sea Shops, Rehoboth Beach, 227-1272,

The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. The recently renovated bandstand has come into its own. The bandstand will be offering everything from a “Delmarva Star” contest to local rockers Love Seed Mama Jump to traditional and swing ensembles in their quest to entertain boardwalk strollers and guests this summer. Plus, you can’t beat the location. Rehoboth Ave. & The Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach, 227-1088.

Bottle & Cork. The legendary “Greatest Rock & Roll Bar in the World” has hosted many of the great musical acts of our time, usually on their way up (or down) fame’s ladder. This year, that includes The Bangles, Citizen Cope, Old 97’s, along with cover acts like Bruce in the USA and a variety of local talent. 1807 Coastal Highway, Dewey Beach, 227-7272,

The Rusty Rudder. The indoor/outdoor entertainment setup at the Rudder has lent itself to a variety of festivals under the guidance of Vikki Walls: the Delaware Music Fest, PopFest, ChickFest and the largest, the Dewey Beach Music Conference. The Rudder still has great regular live music from quality local bands, but the festivals dominate. 113 Dickinson St. & The Bay, Dewey Beach, 227-3888,

Baycenter for the Performing Arts. The winner for “best view” of all of the venues has to be the second-story bayfront Baycenter, which has played host to charity events, New Year’s Eve bashes and a variety of musical acts over its many years. 124 Dickinson St. & The Bay, Dewey Beach, 226-1680,

Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts. This venue resides inside the old Methodist church on Baltimore Avenue, less than a block from the boardwalk, and offers a variety of theater arts and musical acts. This year, they feature doo-wop from Danny and the Juniors, a Grateful Dead tribute act, the First State Ballet and much more.  20 Baltimore Ave., Celebration Mall, Rehoboth Beach, 227-9310,
