‘Delmarvelous Seafood’ talk kicks off Ocean Currents Lecture Series

Are you curious about issues that affect the marine environment? Then you’re invited to join the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) this summer for the annual Ocean Currents Public Lecture Series at the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Del.

The lectures, which are free and open to the public, take place once a month through August. Talks begin at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of Cannon Lab at the Lewes campus on Pilottown Road. Last year’s topics ranged from the natural history of the osprey to stranded marine mammal rescues, and this year’s lineup is sure to be just as enticing.

The first lecture in the series will be given Thursday, June 25, by Doris Hicks, seafood technology specialist with the Delaware Sea Grant College Program. Hicks’ talk, “Delmarvelous Seafood,” will discuss how to store, handle, and prepare local seafood. The audience will get to sample the tasty, healthy dishes she prepares.

Hicks, who has more than 27 years’ experience as a seafood technology specialist, conducts research on seafood-related issues, including processing methods and consumer perspectives. In addition to educating consumers as well as members of the seafood industry about safe seafood processing and use, she is the organizer of multiple annual seafood cooking events such as the Coast Day Crab Cake Cook-Off and Chowder Challenge.

In addition to samples of the prepared seafood dishes, light refreshments will be available to guests after the hourlong talk. While the lecture is free, seating is limited and reservations are suggested.
