Restaurant Row — Surf Bagel

First appeared in Coastal Sussex Weekly, May 28, 2009:

The winner of our “Best Breakfast Joint at the Beach’ online poll, Lewes’ Surf Bagel is a big favorite of locals and visitors alike, particularly the students and teachers of nearby Cape Henlopen High School. Their 40-seat dining room is usually packed to the gills with people of all ages, and demand can be so strong that there are flip-flop decals on the floor to direct customers as to where the line forms.

Surf Bagel features fresh bagels baked daily on the premises that are as good as any bagel you can find anywhere. Use the bagel for the base of a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich or a generous helping of nova salmon, cream cheese, red onion, capers and tomato.

Green Mountain Coffee is on tap every morning to greet customers, as well as a breakfast menu that goes far beyond bagels to include breakfast wraps, pastries and more.

Lunchtime brings favorites like the Aloha Wrap (chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and ranch dressing), the Kira’s Veggie Wrap (hummus, grilled peppers, black beans, 3 cheese blend, lettuce, tomato and onions), chessesteaks, and bagel sandwiches topped with chicken salad or tuna salad.

For a long time, Surf Bagel was a local’s secret. It safe to say at this point that the secret’s out.
