by Dave on August 22, 2009

The Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Historic District Business Committee began meeting earlier this year to implement a new event which is called “First Thursdays – Celebrate Lewes Life” and will take place on the first Thursday in September (3rd), October (1st) , November (5th) followed by the 23rd Annual Merchants’ Hospitality Night which on the first Thursday in December – December 3rd. The committee is chaired by Matt DiSabatino, owner of Striper Bites and co-owner of Half Full and Kindle. Committee members include Carol DiSabatino, co-owner of Two Friends, Lesley Bowers, owner of P.U.P.S. of Lewes, Amy Felker, owner of Notting Hill Coffee Roastery and Michiko Seto, owner of Blooming Boutique.

The idea to have a monthly event began three years ago when the Historic District Business Committee met frequently during the major renovation of Second Street to sponsor activities to generate business to the area while the street was under construction. The culmination of the project’s completion was a big street fest and many merchants and local residents expressed an interest in having a similar event again. Matt’s committee began planning the event in February of this year and requested permission to partially close Second Street from Bank Street to Market Street and a portion of Market Street between Front and Second Street.

Participating merchants will be open for extended hours on the First Thursdays with in-store specials and activities; there will be musical entertainment in front of Citizens Bank – this month featuring Charity Case – Amy Felker and Stuart Vining from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. followed by Megan Ernakovich from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.; Kids’ Story Time, arts and crafts and face painting by chamber member Kids’ Cottage in Mary Vessels Park, a magic show by Charlie Joseph and musical entertainment by Nancy Joseph, Plein air painting by the artists from the Cape Artists Gallery – all in the closed part of Market Street.

Some of the announced activities in the businesses on the first First Thursday include: Hat Day at Striper Bites – wear your favorite hat while you dine and get a 15% discount off the entire bill; Two Friends is having a contest to see who can bring in the oldest Vera Bradley item which will then be on display in the store on a clothes line; Puzzles has a special promotional drawing for a 20% gift certificate; Lewes Gourmet will be featuring BBQ pork sandwich samples made with products they sell and will be discounted 10% during the hours of the event; Blooming Boutique and On a Ball are teaming up to raise money for local charities – a percentage of every sale will go to one of six local charities of the purchaser’s choice. On A Ball’s Bonnie Truitt will be in Blooming Boutique selling personalized gifts.

October’s First Thursday event on October 1st will feature a unique activity for everyone with a puppy or without – a “Puppy Poker Walk” conceived by P.U.P.S owner, Lesley Bowers. A “Bobbing for Apples” activity will be set up on Market Street.

November’s First Thursdays entertainment showcases Clear Space Productions. They will perform a Broadway-style review in front of Citizens Bank from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. followed by performances at various restaurants as part of a fundraiser for the Cape Henlopen High School’s Theatre Arts Academy’s trip to perform in Osaka, Japan in April 2010.

First Thursdays is a Rain or Shine event. Some of the announced outside activities may not be offered if weather does not permit.
