Beebe Medical Center Recognized By the Premier Healthcare Alliance

Beebe Medical Center today announced it has been recognized by the Premier healthcare alliance as a winner of the Premier Award for Quality (AFQ).

Beebe Medical Center is one of 21 hospitals and 3 health systems of the 3,788 eligible hospitals and 346 health systems nationwide — the top 1 percent — that have been recognized with the Award.

The award recognizes leading healthcare organizations that efficiently provide outstanding patient care and consistently set the standard in clinical excellence. The AFQ’s performance-based criteria — including clinical quality outcomes, resource utilization, and clinical process indicators — measures top performers at the overall hospital level.

“This recognition is a credit to everyone at Beebe Medical Center,” said Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President/CEO of Beebe Medical Center. “It reflects the commitment and dedication of our Board, our physicians, our clinical staff and all employees who work to continually improve the quality and safety of the care that we bring to our community.

“The award recognizes the attention to detail that has made our clinical outcomes among the best in the nation,” he continued. “We have established protocols following best practice guidelines to maintain high quality standards. For example, we participate in the Surgical Care Improvement Project, a national quality improvement program aimed at significantly reducing surgical complications. We use feedback from this program and the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program to monitor our outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement. We also have initiated strict infection prevention protocols and best practice measures to improve the care and treatment of patients with pneumonia, heart failure and heart attack.

“We are proud of our collective efforts to continually identify opportunities for improvement, and for focusing on quality and on producing excellent results and outcomes for our patients.”

Mr. Fried accepted the award, along with Janet B. McCarty, Chair of the Beebe Medical Center Board of Directors, and Stephen Fanto, MD, Chair of the Board’s Committee on Quality and Safety, at the 2010 Premier Annual Breakthroughs Conference & Exhibition, which was held June 8-11 in Washington.

“The AFQ honors the efforts of industry leaders to provide high-quality care,” said Susan DeVore, Premier President and CEO. “As we celebrate the achievements of these facilities, the alliance is helping to further improve the health of communities across the nation.”

All acute care inpatient facilities in the United States that submitted data to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the CMS Hospital Compare project were considered for the AFQ. Using MedPar 2008 data, Quality and Efficiency Indexes were calculated for 60 disease groups and at the overall hospital level. Quality was measured by the incidence of three adverse outcomes: mortality, morbidity and complications, which are combined into a single Quality Index using the preference weightings from the Corporate Hospital Rating Project (CHRP). The efficiency index was generated using length of stay to proxy for resource utilization.

Acute care facilities attaining the top 1 percent designation are identified as having scores in the top two quintiles for process of care, and in 10 out of 60 disease groups and at the overall hospital level for quality and efficiency. Hospitals had measures for quality and efficiency that were equal to or exceeded expected outcomes. In addition, new for 2010, Premier measured aggregation to the system level, with the same methodology, for healthcare system awards.

Beebe Medical Center, a community-owned, not-for-profit hospital with 210 licensed beds, is committed to quality and safety. Earlier this year, Beebe Medical Center was ranked in the top five percent in the nation for overall patient outcomes in a study issued by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. This accomplishment led to Beebe Medical Center receiving the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Awardâ„¢.

HealthGrades also has ranked Beebe Medical Center number one in Delaware for overall orthopedics in 2010 and the only hospital in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia to receive 5-star ratings for all orthopedic procedures measured by HealthGrades.

Tunnell Cancer Center has received national recognition for its quality standard of care. The award means that Tunnell Cancer Center not only meets the standards set down by the Commission on Cancer, but that we have exceeded them. Last summer, the Commission granted Tunnell Cancer Center a Three-Year Approval with Commendation. It was the second time in a row that Tunnell Cancer Center has gained the coveted Commendation designation, although Tunnell Cancer Center has consistently received approval from the Commission.

Beebe Medical Center focuses on continually improving its processes. Through the efforts of Chief of Surgery Michelle Thomas, MD, Beebe Medical Center is participating in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, bringing a host of best practices and evidence-based initiatives to improve surgical care. Beebe Medical Center already has implemented digital mammography services and digital scoping technology for gastroenterology screenings and examinations. It is working closely with the physicians on the Medical Staff to develop a comprehensive electronic medical record system.
