Hanson becomes new Dewey Beach mayor

Diane Hanson is the new mayor of Dewey Beach.

Hanson was nominated for mayor by Commissioner Marty Seitz during a brief Oct. 2 town reorganization meeting. Her nomination was seconded by Commissioner Jim Laird and the nomination was approved.

Hanson is shown in the above photo being sworn in by then mayor Rick Solloway. Solloway is also shown swearing in Commissioners Jim Laird (center) and Commissioner Marty Seitz.

Laird and Seitz were elected on Saturday, Sept. 25 in the town election. They were sworn in as the first order of business at Saturday’s meeting. Seitz was sworn in first, taking a long oath promising to perform his duties as Dewey Beach Commissioner.

After Laird seconded Hanson’s nomination for mayor, Commissioner Zeke Przygocki said he would like to have Solloway remain as mayor.  But Town Attorney Glenn Mandalas said the commissioners should vote on the motion on the floor, namely to name Hanson as the mayor.

The motion passed with Przygocki voting no.

Solloway will remain as a town commissioner.

“I promise to serve you all well and to follow the will of the people,” Hanson said. She noted that the town has made great strides with its budget and said she looks forward to working with everyone.

“I look forward to a very positive and productive year ahead,” she said.

Hanson released an official statement late Saturday, following her election:

I’m very pleased to be able to continue to serve the town but in the new capacity as mayor. During the three years that I have served so far,  I feel that town council has made tremendous progress in professionalism, budget management, communication, infrastructure, and streamlining of our election process itself.

My goals for the future would be to continue the progress we made and develop a plan to address the priorities of the public with input from the property owners of Dewey Beach.
